2009 Fantasy baseball rankings: designated hitters

Fantasy baseball rankings by position: 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, C, DH, OF, SP, RP

Not much to report here. There are some players you’ll have to pick as a designated hitter because they don’t even moonlight at first or third like a lot of the lumbering sluggers.

OK, it’s not quite that simple, there are questions with David Ortiz and Travis Hafner.

Hafner will be available cheap and used to be a stud, so he’s an upside pick. I think Ortiz is overvalued. I don’t like picking him this year. His numbers were down last year across the board thanks to some injuries, so you’ll pay too much, but he’s still the best designated hitter-only batter in the game.

Jim Thome, Gary Sheffield and Frank Thomas are baseball elders, but could be worth a very late pick. Of the three, Thome’s the best pick.

What do you think? You going to pick a designated hitter this year? Let us know in the comments.

I’m definitely willing to give Hafner a shot out of this group — as long as I can get him later in a draft, which usually isn’t a problem. Interesting that for guys who rarely see action on defense anymore, that these guys have so many injury questions.
