2009 fantasy baseball rankings: Shortstops

Fantasy baseball rankings by position: 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, C, DH, OF, SP, RP

Shortstop is an absolute glamour position, they make dazzling defensive plays and they’ve got some outstanding hitters, including the best and third-best players in the game in Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes, respectively.

imageAnd, based on the scarcity of the position and the talent level of the hitters, it would be no stretch to pick Reyes as the No. 1 or 2 pick in your draft.

Even the third best guy here, Jimmy Rollins, will provide awesome fantasy numbers.

However, after those big three, question marks start to appear. Michael Young is moving to third base, Alexei Ramirez is unproven and nobody’s sure if Troy Tulowitski is ready to bounce back to the form he flashed as a rookie.

Some guys that you should take a hard look at on draft day: Jhonny Peralta drops to almost criminal depths, so does Stephen Drew.

Any shortstop taken in the first three tiers is a fantasy starter. There are a couple, J.J. Hardy and Derek Jeter, from Tier 4 who could prove me wrong and join that crowd.

What do you think? Who’s better Ramirez or Reyes? Will Jeter continue to decline? Let us know in the comments.

I love Derek Jeter, but he always seems to be picked early on name basis alone. Therefore, he hardly ever makes it on my team. Overall, I find myself drawn to H-Ram, Reyes and Rollins early in every draft I participate in. They are so much beyond the skillset of others at the position, that having them gives you an immediate advantage over some of the other teams in your league. As ep said, Peralta seems to never get any love in fantasy drafts this year. My big sleeper this year is Khalil Greene. I wouldn’t want him as my starter going into the season, but I definitely would love to have him on my bench. There is a good chance that he’ll blossom this year in a different atmosphere, a friendlier park and more competent coaches and players around him.
