And we are go for Live 2010 NFL Draft coverage. Won’t you come join us.
*Sorry folks, we don’t have the technology for automatic updates. You’re going to have to refresh every few minutes. New content will always be at the top. If you have something to add or a question to ask, email ep(at)chinstrapninjas.com or leave a comment.*
11:14 — Are you still here? Thanks for sticking around. Check out the stuff on our 2010 NFL Draft page. Our front page content is updated regularly.
11:08 — We’ll be back tomorrow night for rounds two and three and back again on Saturday. If you enjoyed your stay, won’t you come back for another night (or two)?
11:05 — Draft profile:
“Plays in the spread offense, taking the bulk of his snaps from the shotgun… Tends to side-arm his passes going deep…Lacks accuracy and touch on his long throws… Seems more comfortable in the short/intermediate passing attack…Does not possess the ideal height you look for in a pro passer, though his ability to scan the field helps him compensate in this area…Will improvise and run when the passing lanes are clogged, but tends to run through defenders rather than trying to avoid them to prevent unnecessary punishment.”
That was one of Drew Brees‘ profiles from 2001. There’s some Bradford (spread/shotgun) and some Tebow (side arms throws) in there, no?
11:04 — Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State. The final pick of Day 1. But that doesn’t mean we’re done. We’re going to crank up some new content in our forums. What was the best pick? What was the worst pick? We’ll have polls and topics. Please go there now and speak to us.
11:03 — Drew Brees is too small. Won’t make it in the NFL.
10:55 — Colts pick Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU. If you listen to John Gruden every player is the greatest player at his position. It should be annoying, but he’s pretty good as an announcer.
10: 51 — If Claussen doesn’t go here he falls all the way to the Chiefs or Eagles in the second round?
10:46 — Lions pick Jahvid Best, RB, CAL. So, another “talented” running back heads off to Detroit to die?
10:45 — Lions on the clock. Clausen falls once again.
10:42 — Must. Pick. Smurfette.
10:39 — Wow, just read Sockonfl’s rant in the comments. Forgot they had Cromartie. Maybe they move one of the to S? Cromartie?
10:37 — Jets pick Kyle Wilson, DB, Boise State. Could he be an IDP factor opposite Revis Island? Will anyone throw on the Jets if Wilson is any good?
10:36 — So, still only one QB (Tebow is a wildcat project) and one RB (Spiller is a KR/PR) taken so far in the draft. Send hate mail to ep(at)chinstrapninjas.com.
10:32 — Jets pick Brian Price? For the record, I’ve been completely wrong on every one of these guesses.
10:29 — Dolphins pick Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State. Odrick plays in the Chinstrap Ninjas back yard. Saw him play in person a couple times. Watch the highlights. He’s worth a first-round pick.
10:26 –Let us get crazy hypothetical for a moment. Is it too early (12 years) to draft Peyton Manning’s replacement? The Dolphins and Jets won’t go QB, but if the Vikings don’t get a Brett Favre replacement — they just brought back Tavaris Jackson — what about the Colts?
10:24 — No wonder the Patriots kept trading down. Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers is not a first-round pick despite his 40 time at the Combine.
10:22 — ESPN is showing how far Aaron Rodgers and Brady Quinn fell. Makes me wonder if we’re judging Brady Quinn too quickly. Look how long Rodgers had to stew, and that was behind arguably the greatest QB of all time, not Derek Anderson.
10:19 — I’d say Patriots pick Smurfette, but maybe they trade out again. Still trying to wrap my head around how Tebow gets picked before Clausen for all the NFL-ready stuff. Vikings get him at 30?
10:17 — Cardinals pick Dan Williams DT, Tennessee.
10:14 — So, with Smurfette still on the board, could the Cardinals show they’ve given up on Matt Leinart?
10:10 — Will Tebow be a the Wildcat/change of pace QB or will he be the starter by the end of the year. Man, I really hate to think this, but I’m leaning starter. We’ll know in camp if he’s got that new throwing motion down.
10:09 — So, not only is Tim Tebow a first-round pick, he goes at 25th overall. It’s official, Broncos pick the Florida Gators QB. In case you weren’t aware, he’s practically God on a football field.
10:08 –League dragging it’s feet here. Not sure what’s going on. Be sure to check in with us tomorrow. We’ll have some analysis from the first day and, of course our normal baseball coverage. Also, dudes, get over to the forums.
10:06 — There are a lot of Broncos hats being worn in the Tebows’ living room.
10:05 — So Tim Tebow is getting picked before Jimmy Clausen. Wow. This draft is totally messed up. Am I dreaming?
10:04 — Broncos are on the phone with Tim Tebow?
10:04 — Ravens are like, forget this. We don’t want this pick. Who wants it? Broncos raise their hands.
10:01 — Ravens camp is not amused. Rob Gronkowski?
10:00 — Cowboys pick Dez Bryant. Going back to my efficiency ratings, Cowboys have a +114, the best by almost 30 points. They can evaluate talent. If Jerry Jones think he can make Dez Bryant work. He’ll probably make Dez Bryant work.
9:58 — Cowboys are on the clock. Bryant to bookend with Mile Austin. Awesome duo.
9:54 — And the Patriots take Jimmy Clausen?
9:51 — Packers pick is in. They picked Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa. Aaron Rodgers sacked 50 times in 2009. I’d call this a good pick.
9:49 — Demaryius Thomas a good pick by the Broncos? Should they have taken Bryant? I’ve read and seen a bunch of stuff saying Thomas was the best receiver in the class. We’ll have to see.
9:47 — Some fantasy thoughts on Gresham. The Bengals have never really used the tight end much in the passing game even after picking TEs high. With a talent like Gresham, they’ll have to, right?
9:45 — Broncos pick Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech. Dez Bryant sulking in the corner with Smurfette.
9:44 — If there was a trade, McDaniels is going after Clausen or Bryant?
9:42 — According to NFL.com, the Broncos pick is already in… But it’s supposed to be New England’s pick. Right?
9:42 — Bengals pick Jermaine Gresham, TE. One of the best athletes in the draft. Uh, Smurfette is not amused.
9:40 — One of the other QBs has to get picked tonight. Who will it be, Clausen, McCoy or Tebow?
9:38 — Kareem Jackson, DB, from Alabama going to Houston. Texans always defense-happy at drafts.
9:36 — Texans pick waiting for ESPN commercials…
9:32 — Atlanta’s quick pick: Sean Weatherspoon, OLB. Chris Mortensen just redacted a Jermaine Gresham prediction to replace it with Weatherspoon.
9:29 — Maurkice Pouncey, C, goes to the Steelers. Let’s keep trying to put Clausen on a team. “But the Falcons have Matt Ryan!” Let’s do it anyway.
9:27 — Topic of conversation in the comments is about Jimmy Clausen falling so far. Steelers are unloading Big Ben… Santonio Holmes is gone. Steelers undergoing a little rebuilding here, pick Clausen?
9:24 — San Francisco takes OG Mike Iupati, Idaho. 49ers heed jzak’s advice that Alex Smith is actually pretty good.
9:20 — Titans pick Derrick Morgan, DE, Ga.Tech. That’s the fourth consecutive defensive player selected. They’re really making it interesting for us fantasy players, no? How much does a pass-rusher like Derrick Morgan affect a DEF/ST?
9:13 —Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, picked by the Giants. A serious pass-rush specialist. Quote in The Sporting News: “I’m going to get to the quarterback no matter what. My first year in the the NFL, I want to break records. That’s my goal.”
9:12 — Rolando McClain… Darn.
9:06 — Just an FYI, we’re going deeper on the Spiller to Buffalo pick in our forums.
9:05 — Earl Thomas, DB, Texas goes to the Seahawks. You could probably put Haden and Thomas as 1A and 1B in this year’s class.
9:03 — And the Seahawks take Smurfette? (You have been reading the comments, right?)
9:00 — Interesting trades. Felt like the Chargers gave up a lot to move up for Mathews, but the Eagles only gave up two thirds to move on Graham. Chargers were pretty heavy favorites for Mathews though.
8:58 — Eagles defense will put players in position to make plays, but I’m not sure Graham will be an IDP pick for this year.
8:56 — Eagles shock the world, and the ESPN crew, by taking a DE and not a DB. Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan. Best DE in the class.
8:51 — Mathews averaged 6.0, 5.4 and 6.0 per carry in his three college seasons. As a junior, scored 19 TDs and rushed for more than 1,800 yards. He’s not going to catch the ball at all.
8:50 — Chargers select Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State. Let’s talk fantasy again.
8:48 — Shawn Merriman on Twitter says they’re getting a DT…?
8:46 — Miami-San Diego trade upcoming. Interesting. What do you guys think about Ryan Matthews?
8:43 — OT Anthony Davis picked by San Francisco with Broncos pick. Denver got one of the 49ers first-rounders and picked up a little something extra in the deal. If Davis is the real deal, can protect Alex Smith and help open lanes for Frank Gore, this is a fantastic pick.
8:41 — First trade, because teams want to keep messing up this prime time draft.
8:39 — Another surprise pick. Tyson Alualu, DT, CAL. Is it just me or did Commissioner Goodell hesitate for a second as if he was shocked at the pick?
8:38 — Our newly redesigned, and far more user-friendly, forums are getting some updates. Polls up now: Vote on The best pick out of the first five and Did the Rams make the right choice in picking Bradford?
8:34 — Jaguars were rumored to have interest in Spiller. Are they scrambling now? Spiller pick is one that changes every team’s draft board.
8:32 — Wow, we go from a graveyard for fantasy talk to the ridiculous implications this surprise pick could have. Catching passes, returning kicks, running the ball. I think he could bust, but he could also be the player that Reggie Bush was supposed to be.
8:31 — BOOM! Bills not even giving us a chance to breath, select C.J. Spiller. So they’ll have Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. Someone’s job is not so safe.
8:29 — Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama! Wow. So, as a Giants fan I wanted to see McClain fall. He’s the best LB in the class. Surprising pick. Like Berry, if McClain starts he could be a difference-maker in IDPs because he’ll be on the field a lot.
8:28 — Deep Breath. here. It. Comes.
8:26 — The Raiders can’t make another Darrius Heyward-Bey mistake, can they?
8: 21 — Joe Haden, CB, to the Browns. Unfortunately for us fantasy fans. Haden probably won’t be worth owning this year, even if you must pick a DB. If he’s good, they won’t throw his way and if he’s not good he won’t start. Safeties are more likely to make an impact.
8:17 — Browns are officially on the clock. Jay-Mo’s mock had the Browns picking Jimmy Clausen but said Dez Bryant was a possibility. He said Berry was the player they should pick, but he’s already off the board.
8:15 — Seahawks select Russell Okung, OT. How disgusted did C.J. Spiller look in that shot before they went to the commish? At least two out of Spiller, Best, McKnight — if not all three — are busts.
8:13 — Compare Spiller’s face to Okung’s. We all know what’s coming. socknfl called it in the comments.
8:11 — Berry: 5-11, 203. He had 241 tackles, 14 picks and two forced fumbles in a three-year career at Tennessee.
8:09 — Said in the comments — you are checking the comments? — that a skilled DB on a team like the Chiefs could be huge in IDP leagues that mandate a DB slot. I’d think about drafting him.
8:07 — Eric Berry, S, just picked by Chiefs. Draft is flying along, even though there’s been only one skill player taken so far.
8:05 — Berry might be one of my favorite players in this draft. He’s considered the best player at his position in this class. Broadcast just picked up Berry saying KC Chiefs on the phone.
8:03 — My Twitter followers are barking out Okung, Dez Bryant, Eric Berry as the Chiefs’ pick.
8:00 — Ooh, it’s the Chefs. This should be fun. Worst efficiency rating in the game, -87. Twenty-two teams have positive scores. The Cowboys lead with a +114.
7:58 — Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma is the pick. Guess I was wrong about Shanahan. It’s not his deal to pick big offensive players in the first round anyway. Even Portis was a second-rounder.
7:54 — Redskins are the first team to mess up draft boards, right here. I think Shanahan wants to make a statement. Of course, getting an LT to protect his new, and injury prone, QB would be smart, too.
7:52 — Gerald McCoy is the pick. Any IDPers excited enough to grab a rookie DT in 2010?
7:51 — Bucs are second-least efficient evaluator of talent in the NFL in the last five years. They are -70 on my totally scientific scale. But they won’t go wrong if they pick McCoy.
7:46 — Now for the Buccaneers. Consigliere said in his mock draft that they’ll take LT Russell Okung. They could also take the second-best player in the draft, Gerald McCoy.
7:44 — Lions pick Ndamukong Suh. That shouldn’t surprise anyone.
7:39 — Lions are going to take one of those stud DTs, but this is a fantasy liveblog, so the last five first-round skill position picks for the Lions:
- Matthew Stafford, Brandon Pettigrew in 09
- Calvin Johnson in 08
- Mike Williams in 05
- Roy Williams in 04
- Charles Rogers in 03
7:37 — Pick is in. Surprise, it’s Sam Bradford. Is he starting from Day 1? Where are we picking him in dynasty drafts?
7: 33 — If you want to see the Rams last five first-round picks, check out this draft efficiency post from earlier this week. Last five skill players picked in the first round:
- Steven Jackson in 04
- Trung Canidate in 00
- Torry Holt in 99
- Lawrence Phillips 96
- Eddie Kennison 96
7:25 — Be sure you check out the NFL Draft topics in our forums. Get over there and tell us what you think.
7:23 — There’s been a lot of discussion about Tim Tebow in the pre-Draft coverage. Does anybody think Tebow will make a great pro?
7:16 — Top five teams at evaluating talent, based on the last five years of drafts: Dallas, San Diego, New York Giants, Baltimore, Denver. Worst five: Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis.
7:06 — Off and running, a few minutes late. But I was compiling a 1-32 efficiency ranking. So, who thinks the Rams make their pick with seconds left? Who thinks they already have it written down and ready to go?
