2011 Week 3: Waiver Wire Wonders

Here are the Chinstrap Ninja waiver wire wonders as I see them for Week 3 of the NFL season.

QB – Matt Hasselbeck – (owned in 19% of Yahoo leagues) Hasselbeck has established a nice rapport with both Kenny Britt and Nate Washington, making both of those receivers fantasy relevant especially in PPR leagues.  Plus he wasn’t sacked last week either versus the vaunted Ravens defense.  That gives some kudos to the offensive line protecting him.  Hasselbeck could be a sneaky good play moving forward.

RB – Thomas Jones – (owned in 36% of Yahoo leagues)  Jones will be supplanting Jamaal Charles for the remainder of 2011 due to Charles season ending ACL tear.  At least he will be an every week starting back if you are looking for some running back help.

WR – Eric Decker – (owned in 19% of Yahoo leagues)  Decker put up a fantastic performance this week with Brandon Lloyd out.  9 receptions for 113 yards and 2 TD’s are certainly nothing to sneeze at.  Now with rumors Eddie Royal may miss some time as well, Decker may finally get a chance to prove his meddle on a week to week basis.

TE – Fred Davis – (owned in 22% of Yahoo leagues) I recommended Davis in this spot last week, but based on his ownership percentage no one must have believed me.  All Davis did in week 2 was tear of 6 receptions for 86 yards and a TD.  Look for Davis to have a nice season moving forward as he has a nice rapport with Rex Grossman.

DEF – Arizona – (owned in 20% of Yahoo leagues) The Cardinals play Seattle this week which is probably the worst team in football right now.

I am thinking Dexter McCluster will take a big benefit from Jamaal Charles’ absense too.

You are correct Sam. McCluster will see an uptick in plays as well. In fact Jones and McCluster split touches in Charles absense this past week. Jones had 12 carries. McCluster has 8 carries and 4 receptions.

Any thoughts on Jerome Simpson as a pickup for this week?

Jaime: Jerome Simpson is not a bad pickup off your waiver wire. He was targeted 9 times in each of the first two games catching 4 balls in each. In Week 3 the Bengals due go up against a very suspect pass defense in San Francisco. He just needs to catch a higher percentage of those targets he has been getting for me to jump on the bandwagon fully.

    thoughts on titus young?

Who will be a better ppr receiver for the long term? David Nelson, Nate Burleson, or Eric Decker. Also I own Robert Meachem and Mike Sims-Walker so I would have to drop one of these two in there place. Should I stick with what I have?

    Mark Hopper:

Titus Young is about the fourth option in the Lions passing game behind Calvin, Nate Burleson and Jahvid Best. I would let someone else gamble on Titus Young.

    Chris Bobiac:

My thoughts in your case is stick with Meachem as who knows how healthy Colston will actually be when he comes back. Remember Colston’s knees were bothering him too in training camp. The other I would go with Eric Decker. He looks like an up and coming receiver for the Denver Broncos.

Who to start? I have Gronk, Finley, and Davis at TE? I have Tate, Turner, and Starks at RB? I have Vjax, D.Nelson, J. Nelson, E. Decker, Julio Jones, A. Boldin at WR? Currently I have- Matt Ryan at QB, Hanson at K, Redskins def., Finley at TE, Turner and Tate ate RB, Starks at flex, Vjax and Decker at WR.

First off I would be trading some of that TE talent for upgrades at other positions. I actually thought about putting Gronkowski on the stud list this week. He should be in a shoot out game vs Buffalo and hopefully get some of the looks that Aaron Hernandez had early on. I would start Gronkowski at TE. Then for your receiver plays, Jordy Nelson has almost matched Greg Jennings production through the first two games. As long as he keeps getting the looks he has been getting, I would start him every week. Also at your flex position, Julio Jones has a nice matchup vs Tampa Bay this week. Look for him to shine in that one, so he would be my flex starter.
