Platinum Shurikens: Fantasy football MVPs

After much discussion, equal hemming and hawing, jzak and I came up with a list of our MVP nominees. I kept trying to throw wrenches into the thing over the last couple of days – Maybe we should have more than three candidates? Maybe we should redefine the V in MVP again? – jzak wouldn’t hear any of it.

The funny thing is, he was the one who was going to redefine MVP in the first place, but I broke him down with my argument about how a player you draft in the first or second round really can’t be a value unless they perform to a ridiculous level above expectations. I’m not so sure I believe myself because there’s something to be said for consistent performances, even from the most pricy draft picks.

As I said in the defining MVP post, there are players who aren’t going to make the cut for our nominees. If you disagree, please feel free to write in your own MVP when you vote in the comments.

Inaugural Platinum Shuriken awards start tonight

I’m sure you read the headline, but it’s a bit of a lie for some of you.

By tonight, I mean 12:01 a.m. EST Tuesday which is technically tomorrow for those of us on the East Coast. For everybody else, ignore the above paragraph, it is a lie.

Voting on our first award, MVP, will be ongoing until… Well, that’s something we haven’t really figured out yet. But it won’t be much more than a week, so get your votes in as soon as possible. We’ll be rolling out several other awards over the next week or so. All of them will be decided by votes in the comments.

Oh, and if you haven’t checked out our fantasy impact reviews of the playoff games this weekend, check them out.

  • Jay-Mo provided his insight – with some nods to the NFL Draft and the rookies you’ll be drafting next year – on the Sunday games.
  • I handled the Saturday games.

Discussion: Defining the V in Fantasy MVP

Last night in the Chinstrap Ninja offices – for clarification, that’s the space surrounding my desk and jzak’s desk at The Daily Item – we started our 2009 fantasy football awards discussion.

We should have done a podcast. There was a pretty interesting discussion about one player in particular who might have to get his own award.

We’ll talk more about him in the future, but let’s talk about defining the valuable part of Most Valuable Player.
