Overview of NFL free agent notables and what might happen with each

You know that today’s opening of free agency in the NFL could be remarkable when there are already major moves taking place.

Take, for example, the Jets acquiring ultra-talented cornerback Antonio Cromartie for a third-round draft pick (it changes to a second-rounder depending on his playing time). Sure Cromartie has a host of off-field issues, but imagine if he can get his act together. Cromartie and Revis in the same defensive backfield?

News from last night also included word that the Bears are on the verge of signing free agent Julius Peppers. This after reports that Peppers would likely go to the Redskins.

Early reports already suggest that receiver Nate Burleson will be signing with the Lions as the No. 2 wideout. Allegedly, Chester Taylor looks close to signing with the Bears.

Free agency this year is marked by what will be an uncapped offseason. The ramifications of this are hard to gauge … opinions seem split on whether or not that will lead to wild spending by certain teams or if most squads will become more financially timid on the signing front.

Regardless, there are a slew of potentially major moves on the horizon. Here is a partial look at some of the main pieces that could be on the move starting today: Continue reading ‘Overview of NFL free agent notables and what might happen with each’

2010 NFL Draft target dossier: Clemson RB CJ Spiller

When the first running back comes off the board on April 22, the name called will be Clemson senior CJ Spiller.

Spiller, who will turn 23 in August, is a 5-11, 195-pound highlight reel of a running back.

The consensus of draft experts have him going to the Seahawks with the 14th overall pick. That’s high for a running back who couldn’t get out from under James Davis‘ shadow at Clemson.

However, Spiller’s all-purpose ability has scouts salivating. Continue reading ‘2010 NFL Draft target dossier: Clemson RB CJ Spiller’

NFL Scouting Combine: Use this guide when you watch 2010 rookies work out today

If you have one day to devote to the NFL Scouting Combine, then Sunday is it. I’m not urging you intently watch all of the drills and repetitive analysis, but at least pay some attention to what comes about.

It might help some of your on-the-fence assessment of these potential draft picks.

Sunday is the big day for fantasy folks as the money players will be on display, well those who choose to showcase their skills. Quarterbacks, running back and wide receivers step on stage to run the 40-yard dash, go through skill drills, verticle leap, broad jump, three-cone and shuttle drills. NFL Draft 2010 target dossier: WR Dez Bryant

The coin flip to determine who will pick No. 10 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft is coming Friday. Oklahoma State junior wide receiver Dez Bryant should be watching very closely.

There are six first-round selections that will be determined by coin toss, but the Broncos 10-11 pick is the likely stopping point for the consensus top wide receiver in the field. Continue reading ‘NFL Draft 2010 target dossier: WR Dez Bryant’

The Sock Exchange: Eagles QB conundrum discussion

Lots of rumors have been running rampant in the media these days on which Eagles QB will be under center in 2010 and what QB or QBs will be traded this offseason.  I write this as a Semi-Eagle fan and as a voice of reason to squash all the innuendos and explain how the Eagles brass looks at players in the Andy Reid era.
