Four downs

1st: 26th in DVOA* overall offense (24th pass, 28th rush) | 2nd in DVOA* overall defense (1st pass, 12th run)

2nd: One of the most effective defenses against the pass in the league, especially against WR1s (7.8 pass attempts per game, 50.5 yards per game) and TEs (6.6, 38.7), according to Football Outsiders’ defense vs. receiver types chart.

3rd: Key loss: LB Kiko Alonso | Key addition: RB LeSean McCoy

4th: Bills Insider Chris Brown writes that new offensive coordinator Greg Roman will have a huge impact in Buffalo this season. The Bills have had 11 different OCs since 2000. An improved offense should be music to new addition McCoy’s ears. The addition of TE Charles Clay and WR Percy Harvin to a receiving corps that already includes Sammy Watkins could have a large fantasy impact, if the Bills can get the QB situation figured out. Incumbent E.J. Manuel and newcomer Tyrod Taylor will likely compete for the job in camp. Considering how good the Bills defense was last season, an improved offense could make the Bills a surprising team in 2015.

*Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, a Football Outsiders’ advanced NFL metric, measures a team’s performance on a per-play basis. The metric attempts to limit variance and provides a more realistic measurement of how good a team is regardless of matchup or situation, making it a strong indicator of future success. Read more about DVOA.
