I’m going to be short and sweet with this one because we have a 1 p.m. game and this list seems pretty cut and dried.
As usual, you want to stick with the studs in cash games. As you can see by the chart, Lance Lynn, Jordan Zimmermann, Carlos Carrasco, Jake Arrieta, Gerritt Cole, Hisashi Iwakuma and Jacob Degrom all have top-10 strikeout potential today with mostly decent wOBA matchups.
Tom Koehler looks like he could be the value of the day and worth a start against the strikeout-prone Braves lineup (Freddie Freeman is on pace for 320 Ks — fun with small sample sizes!).
Brandon McCarthy also presents a decent value over those $9,000 players and has the highest win probability, according to Las Vegas, among the players in my top 10, the best wOBA matchup and a top-10 strikeout total.
Anibal Sanchez is 16th but will likely outplay that ranking. He has the best opportunity to win, according to the sportsbooks. He went from a 9.99 K/9 in 2014 to 7.29 in 2014. He’s probably in the middle of that, which means his K ranking will likely skew higher as the season rolls on.
[UPDATED – 1:15 p.m.] – I’ll be rolling with a combination of Carrasco, McCarthy, Zimmerman, Sanchez and Cole in that order in cash games and mix in some Koehler and Degrom because of their strikeout potential in tournaments.
I went with McCarthy and Scott Kazmir in my late-only lineup.
Note: Lynn and Arrieta played in a 1 p.m. game and won’t be available in your draft.
NOTE 2: [1:18 p.m.] – There is a better than 50% chance of rain for the Chicago White Sox-Kansas City Royals game. One comment at RotoGrinders said sports radio in his area said there is no way the game will be played. I don’t recommend starting Danny Duffy or Jose Quintana, but if you do, keep the weather in mind and check a reputable source before lineups lock.
