Baseball players foul pitches off their feet all the time. Fortunately it rarely turns into a serious injury.
Dustin Pedroia, a rare baseball talent, suffered a fracture in his mid-foot after fouling a pitch off his. We’ll know more after some tests Monday, but rehab estimates range from two weeks to six weeks.
In the meanwhile, Bill Hall will replace Pedroia. Hall already qualifies at 3B and OF, so the extra eligibility would be nice if he actually had fantasy value. There are better 2B options, like Sean Rodriguez and Mike Aviles.
Pedroia’s injury is the biggest news of the weekend, but there are several other bits we need to discuss, too.Matt LaPorta — Russell Branyan‘s trade to the Mariners opens up a spot for LaPorta, who was tearing up minor league pitching. He’s hitting .362 with 5 homers in 69 at-bats at AAA. He’s available in 98% of Yahoo leagues.
Trevor Cahill — Struck out 10 batters in 7 2/3 in his last start. The big cut on Cahill has been his lack of strikeouts, but he’s averaging more than a K per inning in his last four starts and has won six of his last eight starts.
Bobby Jenks — Placed on family emergency medical leave. Matt Thornton and J.J. Putz ill continue to share closing duties until he returns. Both Thornton and Putz were mentioned in the most recent holds update.
Asdrubal Cabrera — Could return by the All-Star break. That’s just a couple weeks away. He’s available in 57% of Yahoo leagues and could be a nice speculative add now, especially if you don’t have anybody else on the DL.
Carl Pavano — Pitched a shutout against the Mets on Saturday. It was his second complete game and marked a win in his fourth consecutive start. Over that stretch he has lowered his ERA from 4.11 to 3.33. He’s worth an add for at least a spot start or two. He’s available in 53% of Yahoo leagues.
Jason Heyward — Will have a specialist look at the sore thumb on his left hand and will miss at least two games. Heyward is mired in a 17-for-94 slump (.181) this month. Now is probably the lowest you’ll ever be able to buy him in keeper/dynasty leagues.
Madison Bumgarner — Was not effective in his first start, giving up four runs and striking out five in seven innings. Don’t give up on him yet. He had just an 0.86 WHIP. He’s still available in 93% of Yahoo leagues and should be rostered for at least another start or two.
Neil Walker — Pirates 2B prospect suffered a mild concussion this weekend and will be reevaluated on Monday. Walker was unimpressive in 17 games last season but has been a pleasant and underrated surprise so far this season. In his last 10 games, Walker is 13-for-42 (.309) with nine runs, four RBI and two homers. For those of you dealing with the Pedroia situation, especially in deep leagues, Walker could be a good addition. He is available in 94% of Yahoo leagues.
Carlos Santana — Still available in 48% of Yahoo leagues, but should not be. In the last week he hit .300 with a pair of homers and eight RBI. Fix this, Ninjas.
