The number one player in this year’s rookie class is not Ryan Mathews. It is Dez Bryant.
First of all, barring some sort of trade situation the team that is picking first is the worse team. That team needs a consistent year-in, year-out producer. Sockonfl predicted 75-85 1100-1200 yards and 6 touchdowns for Bryant, and that seems like a good gauge for me. So if he produces around those numbers you would be a pretty happy owner. Throw in that he will likely achieve more touchdowns as time goes on with a solid quarterback like Tony Romo at the helm, he should be a very good wide out for years to come.
Why not Mathews? The Chargers are close to the Superbowl and they are going to run Mathews and run him right into the ground. The most likely scenario here is that Norv Turner and company drive Mathews into the ground in route to the playoffs and a possible Superbowl. With the window closing in on the Chargers they will pound Mathews a ton and have no regard for the longevity of his career. I’d be willing to bet a good sum of money that Bryant’s career is longer than Mathews.
As the worst team, your team would be better served to get a player that you could keep for years to come and plug him in week in and week out.
Dez Bryant is a big time talent and a big time player. While Miles Austin will provide the deep threat, Bryant will provide the red zone threat and be the over the middle guy. Bryant went from top 10 pick to the 24th selection… Can you say chip on the shoulder? He has maintained that everything that has happened was blown out of proportion and he is a good kid. Jerry Jones said he needed to have this guy and Jones has a pretty good track record in the draft.
I don’t think he has the “character” issues that scared some teams away. He will make an impact on the Cowboys right away.
While I understand stud running backs are the believed only way to win in fantasy, the top fantasy backs rotate from year to year. The top wide outs tend to stay pretty much the same.
Wide outs have a longer shelf life than running backs. There will be another Mathews in the draft next year. Players with Bryant’s talent don’t come along every year. Just think about it like this: would you rather have Andre Johnson now or Willis McGahee / Larry Johnson. Both Johnson and McGahee went to good places and Johnson is currently in a way better place than both of those guys are.
If you have a solid WR core you can select RBs in the other drafts. Not to mention most people believe Mathews is No. 1 so if you are at No. 1 you might be able to move back in the draft to get a few more picks… Thus making your team even better.
Draft Dez Bryant… A top wide out is the gift that keeps on giving.
