Welcome to the bigs J.P. Arencibia, you are the Matt Wieters we were looking for.
In his first major league at-bat, Arencibia homered and everyone was excited. Then, after hitting a double and a single, the rookie was a triple short of the cycle. He didn’t get it, but he didn’t disappoint the hometown Toronto fans either.
Arencibia hit his second homer to finish 4-for-5 with three RBI and 3 runs. Post-game he got shaving cream pies in the face. His Blue Jays teammates were nice enough to rinse them off with Gatorade and water showers. Then they brought more shaving cream pies.
What do shaving cream pies and Gatorade showers have to do with fantasy baseball and your dynasty team?
The celebration was well-deserved, and any dynasty league owner should be feeling just as excited. That was a fantastic day for any major-leaguer, but it’s a rare feat for a rookie making his debut. How rare? MLB Network broke it down last night:
- It’s the first time since 1900 that a rookie had four hits and two homers in his debut
- Only four other players in the history of the game have hit two homers in their debut
If Arencibia was a run of the mill call up we might think this was a fluke and that he might flutter off into the land of the one-hit wonder. But he hit 31 homers with 32 doubles in the minors this season. His power numbers have also improved at every level throughout his short minor league career.
Like we said in the rookies update Friday, Arencibia is still technically backing up Jose Molina. The only reason he’s in the pros right now is because John Buck went on the disabled list. I find it hard to believe that they won’t get Arencibia some more at-bats and regular playing time after that performance and if he continues to hit, they’ll have to make a spot for him.
I added Arencibia in my two dynasty leagues. He may be sent down after Buck returns, but if that happens I’d bet they find a roster spot for him in September.
In any case, I was starting John Jaso in one league, so Arencibia could be a huge upgrade. You starting Jaso, or a catcher like Jaso? Arencibia is available in 83% of Yahoo leagues, but he won’t stay that available for long.
