There were nearly enough pitchers to have a top 10 of their own Saturday, but it was difficult to pick just one for the intro.
Roy Halladay pitched another complete-game shutout and struck out six. He allowed just four baserunners (one walk) in improving to 5-1.
It’s not sexy, but the bottom line — especially for those of you in leagues that reward for complete games and shutouts — is that Halladay throws like the best pitcher in baseball every game out.
Nine other noteworthy performances from Saturday:
Matt Cain — If he had a CG next to his name, Cain’s eight shutout innings would have been in the intro. He improved to 1-1, throwing one-hit ball. He struck out eight and walked three.
Chris Volstad — Another complete game performance puts Volstad in the top 10 for the first time this season. Volstad allowed one earned run, five baserunners and struck out eight. He’s got a 4.45 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.
Yovani Gallardo — With an impressive 40/16 K-to-BB ratio, Gallardo has been ace for most of the season. Saturday’s performance — 11 Ks, eight baserunners and one earned run allowed in seven innings — is just more of the same. he has a 3.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.
Nick Markakis — The first hitter to break into today’s top 10, Markakis belted a three-run homer on a 3-for-4 day. he finished with two runs and five RBI.
Mark Reynolds — Making the most of his two hits, Reynolds belted a pair of solo homers on Saturday. He’s hitting a very Reynolds-esque .253.
Ty Wigginton — In a 2-for-3 day, Wigginton belted a pair of solo homers and walked once. Wigginton’s hitting .324.
David Ortiz — Completely absent from the top 10 so far in 2010, Ortiz belted a pair of solo homers in a 2-for-4 game, improving his batting average to a still pathetic .167.
Kyle Lohse — Allowing one earned run over seven innings wasn’t enough to get Lohse a decision. The Cardinals did eventually win, so Lohse’s five hits, zero walks, and eight Ks did not go to waste. Lohse has a 5.28 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.
Andre Ethier — Bumping a pitcher from the final spot, Ethier went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer. He scored a second run and is hitting .350.
