Omar Infante hasn’t received a lot of publicity here this season and for good reason.
The Braves utility man is not going to win a lot of categories for you, that’s for sure. However, Infante has been rolling of late and qualifies at second, third, short, left field and right field. That’s a lot of eligibility for a player currently owned in only 17% of Yahoo leagues.
He’s hitting .381 (51-134) in his last 42 games and is 16-for-36 (.444) during an eight-game hit streak. For those of you struggling with injuries, Infante’s current streak makes him a legit replacement, even if only for a week or two.
Let’s roll through more adds, drops and news:
Chris Dickerson — Drew Stubbs could be demoted if/when the Reds call up Dickerson. It’s hard to argue with the move. Stubbs has one hit in his last 27 at-bats and is only hitting .228 in the last month. Meanwhile, Dickerson is hitting .442 (19-43) with three homers, seven RBI, six stolen bases and four walks in 13 games for Louisville.
Carlos Silva — Struggled at the end of July, then went on the DL because of an irregular heartbeat. Silva will undergo a heart catheterization on Monday to determine if he needs an ablation. He is expected to pitch again this season, according to Yahoo’s player news. He could come back throwing like the Silva from April and is available in 38% of Yahoo leagues. Why not put that empty DL slot to use?
Ryan Doumit — Said some things about Doumit in the last baseball update. He’s expected to return from his concussion on Saturday.
Tim Lincecum — Read a report on KFFL citing an ESPN reporter, who said Tim Lincecum used a different windup. There isn’t a lot of information out there about this right now. I wonder if it’s a move to keep him healthy, a response to his uncharacteristic lack of dominance this season or something else? You’ll get more when we know more.
Juan Pierre — It’s almost laughable that Pierre is available in almost half of Yahoo leagues (53%). He has 41 steals this season and surpassed 500 in his career on Thursday. He’s not just a one-category player either. Pierre is 19-for-48 (.396) over his 12-game hitting streak.
Roger Bernadina — Will play center field in place of the injured Nyjer Morgan (hip, 15-day DL). Bernadina is probably not a star-in-the-making, but he had 35 or more steals in three of his last four full seasons in the minors. He’s also made the most of his recent playing time, going 8-for-22 (.363).
Mike Lowell — Is expected to take over at 1B in place of the injured Kevin Youkilis (thumb, out for the rest of the season). I’ve never been a fan of Lowell, but for those of you in deep AL-only leagues, he’s worth owning for a stretch if he goes on a hot streak.
Ben Zobrist — With Carlos Pena on the 15-day DL, Zobrist and Dan Johnson will split 1B duties. Zobrist just returned from a stiff back, so the move to first will be beneficial for his health.
