Fantasy football 2011 | Chinstrap Ninjas fantasy football contest: Week 14 results, Week 15 lineups
I hope those of you in the playoffs had better a better week than me. I lost all three playoff games. Despite my bad luck I’d bet a lot of people racked up some points.
This was a crazy week for fantasy football fans. Five quarterbacks scored at least 24.88 points. Nine running backs scored at least 18.3 points and four wide receivers scored 20.9 points or more.
That led to a big week in the Chinstrap Ninjas fantasy football contest, our fourth best week of 2011. As usual, read on to find out what happened this week or skip right to the comments and post your Week 15 lineup.
Dante Bruno and Dr. Zoidberg led our fantasy football expert prognosticators this week. They each started Maurice Jones-Drew — what a tremendous performance from MJD this week? — and Rob Gronkowski. Both teams scored for the second consecutive week and lead the December race with 20 points each.
Purple Coconuts, who like many other teams started Gronk this week, also scored for the second consecutive week to move into third place in the December competition.
As alluded to in the last sentence, Gronkowski was the big dog this week, scoring for six different teams. Team Name Here, Chickenheads & Pigeons and Oops Machine all scored five points thanks to the Patriots tight end.
Brandon, who started Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, scored the only other points in Week 14.
Team Name Here maintained a slim lead over Dante Bruno (67-66) in the overall race. Both teams pulled away from Super Friends (61), 69ers and MoHawks (56 each).
The league tallied 55 points, a total that trailed only weeks 7, 6 and 10.
Both Tom Hagen and Cartisimo cut against the grain with a couple of their starts, but it did not pay off in points. Hagen started Matthew Stafford and Marshawn Lynch. Cartisimo went with Chris Johnson and Victor Cruz this week. Cruz and Lynch were started by two other owners — Dante Bruno started Cruz and Purple Coconuts started Lynch.
Who thought at the beginning of the year that Cruz would get more starts than Hakeem Nicks? Brandon took a chance and started the Giants No. 1 this week. Chickenheads & Pigeons, who started Greg Jennings, was in a similar situation, starting the team’s No. 1 while two other owners started Green Bay’s No. 2, Jordy Nelson.
You have to love fantasy football.
Top players this week:
Quarterbacks
Tony Romo topped a mountain of excellent quarterback performances this week, throwing for 321 yards and four touchdowns to edge Matt Ryan — who threw for one less passing yard. Final tally: 28.84-28.80. Mark Sanchez, Tom Brady and Jake Locker all scored at least 24.88 points.
Running backs
If Maurice Jones-Drew had scored even half as many points this week a few more times this year I would have had another playoff team. Baahh, we all know that’s just fantasy football. For owners who made the playoffs, MJD was probably a game-winner on Sunday. He accumulated 136 total yards and posted four touchdowns to score 37.6 fantasy points. He topped a deep running back field. Shonn Greene was the best of the rest and our would-be tough-luck-point-giver. Greene rushed 24 times for 129 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 58 yards. He scored 24.7 fantasy points.
Wide receivers
In a close race at the top, Marques Colston edged Julio Jones by one receiving yard, 22.5 points to 22.4 points. Colston caught seven passes for 105 yards and two TDs. Jones caught three for 104 and two scores. Antonio Brown, who had a tremendous game on Thursday, could only hold onto the third spot.
Tight ends
Unlike the other positions, the top two tight ends were considerably better than the rest of their colleagues. Rob Gronkowski topped all tight ends with a 160-yard, two-touchdown performance that surely enraged his fantasy opponents. He had 116 yards by halftime and broke the single season TD record for tight ends. If he stays healthy I wouldn’t be surprised if he smashes every tight end record in the game. Antonio Gates was our No. 2 tight end, putting up an impressive two-touchdown, 18.8-point performance.

Post a lineup for Week 15 in the comments. It’s never to late to join up. Each owner has a chance to score up to 35 points in a week, enough points to move into seventh overall. And as long-time owners know, there are more bonus points to be had in the postseason. This race is far from over.

Chickenheads: I was going to ask today if anyone wanted to play in a Fanduel league next week but you beat me to it. I’m not sure I’ll play in a money league, but we could run a league or two.
Anybody else interested in starting up a league or two on Fanduel? (Free site, free or paid games)?
