Four downs

1st: Eighth in DVOA* overall offense (11th pass, 2nd rush) | 17th in DVOA* overall defense (16th pass, 18th run)

2nd: Ineffective at stopping No. 1 wide receivers (9.4 pass attempts and 81.2 yards per game) and receiving running backs (6.2 pass attempts, 38.5 yards per game), according to Football Outsiders’ defense vs. receiver types chart.

3rd: Key loss: Mike Wallace | Key addition: TE Jordan Cameron

4th: The Dolphins made several offseason acquisitions, including Ndamukong Suh, Kenny Stills, Greg Jennings, Josh Freeman and Cameron. All of those players may make a significant difference on their respective units, but the real improvement, according to the Sun Sentinel, may come on special teams. The Dolphins were sixth in average yards per kick return in 2015, but they fumbled six times on returns. Their 8.8 yards per punt return average was 17th in the league and their long PR of 32 yards was tied for 10th worst.

*Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, a Football Outsiders’ advanced NFL metric, measures a team’s performance on a per-play basis. The metric attempts to limit variance and provides a more realistic measurement of how good a team is regardless of matchup or situation, making it a strong indicator of future success.
