Jimmy Clausen tops early 2010 fantasy football rookie quarterback rankings

Just after the NFL Draft, several Chinstrap Ninjas put pen to paper and finger to keyboard to rank the rookies.

Since then, the dragging of feet — mine, for a number of reasons — has kept those rankings from appearing.

Today the final hurdle is cleared and the rankings have become digital reality. Let’s start with quarterbacks, to be specific 2010 fantasy football rookie quarterback rankings.

Some caveats here:

  1. Our opinions certainly have changed to varying degrees since April
  2. They will change more as teams take the field for real training camp stuff (OTAs=fluff)
  3. Our database/layout is not as conducive to tables and lists as some. If you see any funkiness it could be based on browser type/iteration, screen size or my general ineptitude. Describe the funkiness for us in the comments. We’re contemplating options to alleviate this problem in the future.

Note that players are listed based on consensus ranking, but that each writer’s personal ranking is also included:

Nice little compilation we have here. I think there could be some changes to 3 down but the top two I feel are very clear. I think the situation in Carolina is much more conducive to a rookie quarterback. They have a sound line and running game and an elite receiver as well. But only time will tell.

I also nailed the top five. No big deal though.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with where Jay-Mo has Tim Tebow ranked. He has guys like Levi Brown and Dan Lefevour ranked ahead of him. They may never see the field. With McDaniels taking the risk in drafting him in round 1, Tebow will definitely see the field and get an opportunity. Tebow should be ranked ahead of those other QB’s just on opportunity alone. Jay-Mo may disagree on talent, but I can’t see where Tebow won’t at least be given the opportunity to succeed in the NFL.

    We’ll see :)

I wasn’t aware we were ranking the rookie class only for the 2010 fantasy season. If so, then McCoy should be at the bottom of list, because he won’t see the field at all with two established veterans ahead of him in 2010. Really, only Bradford and Tebow have clear paths to the field this coming season.

I based my assessment on who – in order – I felt would be better NFL quarterbacks in comparison of each other, mostly thinking within the three-year range many say is needed to evaluate a draft class. Tebow will have an opportunity, more so than many others on this list, but so what. Opportunity can change as quickly as the weather, especially with injury and coaching changes. It’s what you do with the opportunity that matters. Heck, Tebow may not even be a QB in three years.

In Chicago, who is next in line behind Cutler? Tick, tick, tick, can’t name them eh? I don’t think LeFevour is that far off from getting his chance, especially if Cutler gets hurt.

In Buffalo, is it that far off to believe Brown can’t someday beat out Edwards, Fitzgerald or Brohm. Unlikely, but it’s certainly not crazy.

I’m saying I would draft LeFevour or Brown before I drafted Tebow. Only reason I didn’t have him last was I don’t think Pike or Snead will even be on a roster after training camp.

Well, at least we have our rankings on-the-record!

    @Consigliere: Top 5. Congrats.

@Sockonfl, @Jay-Mo: Maybe everybody else is a little too high on Tebow. That’s one of the advantages of a composite system. If we’re all too high, Jay-Mo’s rank brings us back to reality.

How many “pro” sites are going to have a ranking anywhere with Tebow as the 10th best rookie QB? They’re all going to have Tebow at 2-4 simply because “that’s where he’s supposed to be.” Chinstrap Ninjas don’t do that unless we believe it is correct.

If even one or two people see that ranking, pause, and adjust their thinking because of it, we’re doing work.

That said, dude, Tebow’s totally going to be the No. 3 rookie QB. I already drafted him!

List looks pretty solid. I think Bradford ends up ranked higher because he get’s more PT, personally.

@Mike: Agreed, but unfortunately that time will be spent with the Rams. It’ll be interesting to see how the Moore-Clausen situation plays out in the preseason. Moore definitely deserves a shot after his 2010 finish.
