Patrick Willis, Jon Beason, Jerod Mayo kick off inaugural fantasy football IDP draft

This is my dynasty league’s defensive player draft.

We started this league 3 years ago and we just started with offensive players. This year we decided to add defensive players.

So to do this we are having a 14-round individual defensive player draft in which teams can select any defensive player (rookies included).

A team will start 2-DL(DE or DT) 2-LB(OLB or MLB) and 2-DB(S or CB).

The scoring is as follows:  10-TD, 6-INT, 3-Sack, 2-Forced Fumble, 1-Fumble Recovery, 0.5-Tackle (solo or assist)

I am going to provide the rounds of the IDP draft two at a time and talk about some of the picks and break things down.  In my research in preparing for installing defensive players I found that the scoring systems are very different from league to league and the type of scoring greatly affects which players are the most important.

Round 1

  1. Patrick Willis
  2. Jon Beason
  3. Jerod Mayo
  4. Jared Allen
  5. Julius Peppers
  6. Mario Williams
  7. David Harris
  8. Lawrence Timmons
  9. Terrell Suggs
  10. Dwight Freeney

After the first round it became apparent that the top DLs were flying off the board.  I don’t think that Freeney was first round material due to some injury concerns and age issues.  Under our scoring system Willis and Beason are both monsters and Mayo provides solid numbers with great upside. Allen, Peppers, and Williams were all picked about where I expected.  There is limited elite talent at the DL position and they remain somewhat consistent from year to year.

My pick was Suggs, due to trades and such I had acquired two extra second round picks and had a total of three second round picks. I chose Suggs for a couple reasons outside of last year he has had a very solid career. He is always a threat to get a sack and has had about 65 tackles and 7 sacks per season. While those aren’t eye popping numbers consistency is key.

The second round went as follows:

  1. Justin Tuck
  2. Lamarr Woodley
  3. Troy Polamalu
  4. Brian Urlacher
  5. Trent Cole
  6. Clay Matthews
  7. Eric Weddle
  8. Paul Posluszny
  9. James Laurinaitis
  10. Louis Delmas

In the second round a host of young players were taken. Matthews, Laurinaitis, Delmas, Woodley and Posluszny are young and are the cornerstones for their respective defenses.  I don’t really like the Polamalu or Urlacher picks due to age and injury issues but if they come back healthy they will be good picks.  Both Tuck and Cole are young and elite pass rushers in the NFL.

My picks were Cole, Weddle, and Posluszny.  Cole gives me two of the top pass rushers in the game and solidifies my DL for a couple years.  Weddle is young and has high tackle numbers and gets a few sacks and INTs mixed in.  Posluszny has had big tackle numbers and the Buffalo offense sucks so you know the defense will be on the field a lot.  He has had a few fluke injuries but nothing that scares me too much.

There will be more stuff to come so keep an eye out.  Feel free to weigh in and let me know what you think.  A disclaimer though for some of these players this is their first IDP draft and league that has used defensive players.
