Reviewing the greatest fantasy MVPs in Super Bowl history
As we gear up for Super Bowl XLIV it can’t hurt to reminisce about some of the great moments in the history of the biggest sporting event in America.
John Mackey and Larry Czonka, two of the NFL’s all-time greats grace this four-year period of the Super Bowl. Which player was better? We can use fantasy points as our guide.
Each edition of this series will take short capsule looks at each Super Bowl’s best performances, then we’ll take the best of the best and put them in a rankings list that will be updated every article.
We’ve already reviewed the first four Super Bowls, check back at noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday and every day through Saturday to see how your most memorable performances stack up.
We’re using standard scoring with PPR: 1 pt/20 passing, 1 pt/10 rushing/receiving, 4pts/passing TD, -1 INT, 6 pts/(rushing/receiving TD).
Today’s edition of the series reviews Super Bowls V through VIII:
Super Bowl V: Colts 16, Cowboys 13
MVP: Chuck Howley
Fantasy MVP: Colts tight end John Mackey, 16 points. Mackey caught just two passes in the Super Bowl, but one of them is tied for the seventh longest play in Super Bowl history, a 75-yard TD pass.
Super Bowl VI: Cowboys 24, Dolphins 3
MVP: Roger Staubach
Fantasy MVP: Roger Staubach, 15 points. Staubach threw two TDs and completed 12 of 18 passes in the win. Cowboys tight end Mike Ditka caught a TD and finished with 12 points.
Super Bowl VII: Dolphins 14, Redskins 7
MVP: Jake Scott
Fantasy MVP: Dolphins running back Larry Csonka, 12 points. Csonka had an impressive 112 yards on 15 carries and made a catch. More importantly he acclimated himself to playing in the Super Bowl, setting up his performance the following year.
Super Bowl VIII: Dolphins 24, Vikings 7
MVP: Larry Csonka

These are some really interesting numbers to look at. I look forward to seeing the rest of the Super Bowls displayed. I watched the Replay of the Jets/Colts Super Bowl the other week. It definitely was Snell that was the main offensive threat throughout the game.
@Sockonfl: Thanks. It’s something a little different than just standard fantasy playoff rankings for the Super Bowl.
The hope is that people stumble across it and say, “yeah, I remember that!”
It’ll be cool to watch the rankings evolve, too.
