A lot of fantasy sites offer weekly individual stats projections. Most of those sites are not free. I have no guarantees that these are going to be better than those expensive ones, but they are all pretty realistic. Safe even. At least there’s that.

The projections are based on last season’s statistics with tweaks where necessary for teams that have undergone major changes. It’s not perfect by any means, but it’s all we have this week.

In this edition we discuss the Week 1 game between the Colts and Texans in Houston.

Other games: MIN@NO | CLE@TB | MIA@BUF | CIN@NE | ATL@PIT | DEN@JAX | IND@HOU | OAK@TEN | CAR@NYG | DET@CHI | ARI@STL | GB@PHI | SF@SEA | DAL@WAS | BAL@NYJ | SD@KC

When Matt Schaub and Peyton Manning collide, you’d expect a lot of fireworks, but both teams bring above average pass defenses into the contest. The Colts are projected to win 23-21.

Matchups

While the passing games may be held in check relatively speaking (can you really hold Andre Johnson or Peyton Manning in check?), the running games for each team get a slight boost.

Indianapolis Colts

Quarterback

Peyton Manning: 23-36, 250 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT

Coupon clippers world-wide know the importance of finding good value, even if it is 50 cents off a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner. It isn’t so much the money saved, but the feeling of getting something at a better price than most everyone else. Sort of like fantasy football owners and their sleepers.

We’ve published more than 100 pages of exclusive fantasy football advice, strategies, rankings and … sleepers.

While there may be plenty of question about what constitutes a true “sleeper,” the common consensus is that fantasy football success is tied directly to finding good value players via your draft, trades, waiver wire moves, etc.

So, as one last series to assist our faithful readers, we polled some of our writers, asking them to give us their favorite sleeper at each position and a paragraph each explaining why. Below, we share our favorite receiver sleepers.

Brohamma: Jacoby Jones

The forgotten position in Houston? The receiver opposite Andre Johnson. Kevin Walter was given a new contract, suprisingly, and now Jones is playing for his. I fully expect Jones to claim the 2nd WR position by the end of the preseason and show the world how underrated he’s been. With Owen Daniels saying that he won’t be 100% for the start of the season, Jones will see a marked increase in targets. His 6 touchdowns and 437 yards receiving from last season could easily double. Take Jones late and reap the benefits. Projection: 1,000 yards receiving 10TDs.

sockonfl: Johnny Knox

Knox is 6-0 180 lbs with good speed. A guy by the name of Torry Holt goes 6-0 200 lbs and had speed in his heyday. Why bring up Holt? Because Knox is a Holt clone that will fit well into Mike Martz’s offensive system. While everyone is singing the sleeper praises of Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox was the guy that caught both passes completed by Jay Cutler in the preseason opener. Don’t forget this guy come draft day. Rotoworld has called him “the diamond in the rough.”

Krause: Malcolm Floyd

Vincent Jacksons three game suspension and possible long term holdout make Floyd the number one receiver in San Diego. Floyd finally gets his chance to break out, he’s freakishly big at 6’5”, 225 lbs., which is nice in the red zone. Floyd will definately produce in 2010. The longer Jackson holds out, the better!

jaymo: Jacoby Jones

It shouldn’t take long for Jones to jump ahead of Kevin Walter for the No. 2 slot, which would be fantasy heaven in that offense. Jones is also a tremendous kick returner, which only adds to his 27-437-6 production from last season.

eric: Laurent Robinson

Sam Bradford will be accurate in 2010 and Robinson could benefit as the top option on a team that’s going to be trailing a lot. Donnie Avery’s knee injury makes it pretty certain that Robinson will be the top receiver in Saint Louis.

Consigliere: Mike Williams (TB)

Forget about the college troubles, this cat can ball and he has done so well that he has been named the outright number one wide out in Tampa. Who was the another receiver who had some serious college trouble that was drafted with many question marks and turned out to play with a huge chip on his shoulder… Randy Moss. Now I am not saying he is the next Moss, but it was well known that Williams had first-round talent with a fourth-round attitude. I like him a lot and many people will have cast him away and not to mention all the rankings out there now came out well before the training camp so they are going to be showing no love for Williams.

jzak: Jabar Gaffney

I love a lot of the value WRs this year … so much so that I’ve built a few drafting strategies around them. Gaffney is one player that should be higher on draft boards. People continue to assume that the rookies in Denver (Damaryius Thomas or Eric Decker) will immediately fill the shoes of Brandon Marshall. Or that Eddie Royal will rebound. But what about Jabar? He knows the playbook better than any receiver on the squad. He has great chemistry with Kyle Orton. He will produce WR2 numbers for at least the first half of the season, if not longer. I’m totally happy with that sort of projected production from a guy I can get late in most every draft format.

Check out our staff sleepers at quarterback, running back, tight end, kicker, defense

Here is sockonfl’s wide receiver PPR rankings for the 2010 season.

Also check out our other rankings and our sleepers and draft strategy pages.

Andre Johnson - This big yardage and reception hog is top notch in my book. His only drawback is he has never scored double digit TDs in a season yet. He definitely is the top dog of PPR wide receivers.

Reggie Wayne - Peyton Manning’s #1 target is a consistent receiving machine. He usually is one of the top red zone receivers for Indy too. Hence his number two ranking.

Randy Moss - Moss is said to be in extremely great shape this offseason. Only goes to figure that would happen in a contract year for him. Look for Brady to Moss to be a hot connection in 2010. Probably not as special as the 2007 season, but a really great season in the offing nonetheless.

Roddy White – Roddy says he wants to lead the league in receiving yards in 2010. If Matt Ryan can take a bigger step forward in year 3, I see no reason why Roddy can’t achieve his lofty goals. Roddy IMO should be the top dynasty receiver taken off the board right now.

Miles Austin – Austin emerged as the leading receiver last year in Big D. He should continue to perform well with Tony Romo at the helm.

Brandon Marshall – Another PPR gem receiver. Chad Henne’s new target should do well in the Miami spotlight.

Larry Fitzgerald – The name and past experience has him ranked this high. Personally with Leinart as his QB, I would pass on Fitz and let someone else have him.

Wes Welker – Welker plainly is a PPR stud. He gets around 120 receptions a season. All signs are pointing to a week 1 start for Welker so far. I would draft him with confidence. If you don’t have confidence, just pick up Julian Edelman as a handcuff in the later rounds.

Steve Smith(NYG) – The Giants’ Steve Smith emerged as Eli Manning’s go to receiver in 2009. I am sure that will continue in 2010 with this first down machine. He was also very efficient in the red zone as well last year. A super PPR play as well.

Anquan Boldin – Q becomes the number 1 target for a rapidly maturing Joe Flacco. I look for Flacco to take another big step forward in 2010 and Boldin is the main reason for it.

Greg Jennings – A healthy O-line heading into 2010 should allow more time for Aaron Rodgers to find Jennings down the field for longer passes. He should be in for a big rebound season in 2010.

Marques Colston – Colston doesn’t get the high number of receptions as others this high, but he makes his count for over 15 yard per catch average and being a big red zone target for Brees. Count on him for 1,100 yards and 10 TDs.

Steve Smith(CAR) – Carolina’s Steve Smith reemerged from ruins once Matt Moore took over at QB in 2009. Moore is back for 2010, so look for the Steve Smith of old in 2010.

Calvin Johnson – You ask why is he ranked so low. It’s QB play. He won’t establish himself into the star player that he is until Matthew Stafford matures into a solid pro QB. I say pick Johnson in 2011 or 2012. He should be top 5 WR material by then.

DeSean Jackson – DJax played well in both games that Kevin Kolb started in 2009. He is just so explosive, you just get him the ball and he makes plays. Kolb will continue making Jackson a top receiver.

Chad Ochocinco – The wily veteran remains a top target and should once again be a top receiver in 2010.

Hines Ward – Ward is like the Rodney Dangerfield of wide receivers (he gets no respect). Year in and year out this guy posts solid numbers, but he is overshadowed by the elite players at the position. I would take this gritty player on my team any day.

TJ Houshmandzadeh – Housh’s last 2 seasons have been dismal to say the least. I think he will be pushed more this year by the younger talent on this team. Plus Hasselbeck should find more time with big Russell Okung over at left tackle. 2010 is one more year in the sun for Housh.

Dwayne Bowe – I think Bowe is due for a bounceback 2010. He is in much better shape in camp this season and in Charlie Weis’ offense should add up to big things for the #1 receiving target in KC.

Johnny Knox – Based on offseason chatter, it appears that Knox will be Cutler’s main threat in the Mike Martz offense. That could potentially mean some big things for Knox in 2010.

Malcom Floyd – Floyd could be the big benefactor from a Vincent Jackson absence in 2010. I rate him higher than Jackson, because I feel Jackson truly might not play at all in 2010.

Michael Crabtree – Crabtree is the #2 target behind Vernon Davis in the San Fran pecking order, but he showed good enough promise in 2009 to eventually turn into an impact WR in the NFL. He should take another step forward in 2010.

Santana Moss – Moss has done decent throughout his career with very average QBs throwing him the ball. Now that Donny Mac is in town he could prove to be just what the doctor ordered for a breakout season from Santana Moss.

Mike Sims-Walker – Walker seems to be developing into a decent receiver. If he can stay away from the injury bug, perhaps he can establish himself as a good receiver in this league.

Hakeem Nicks – Nicks had a really nice rookie season despite some early season injuries that set his progress back some. Here’s hoping Eli can continue to find this talented receiver open more in 2010.

Dez Bryant – The first rookie on my list, I think Dez will make an immediate impact in 2010. He just has to fight with all the other talented receiving options in Dallas for the football is all.

Bernard Berrian – Suddenly Berrian is looking like a viable receiving threat in Minnesota with Rice gone to injury and Harvin’s Headaches continuing. He should be on everyone’s sleeper radar this year.

Donald Driver – Here is another tremendously consistent receiver that often gets overlooked in drafts. The offseason knee scopes are a concern especially at his age, but I feel comfortable drafting him here.

Braylon Edwards – I give Edwards the nod over Santonio Holmes in NY mainly due to Holmes’ 4-game suspension. He should emerge as a go to guy for Sanchez in his second season.

Mike Wallace – Not afraid to take him at this stage despite Big Ben’s probable 4-game absence. He will be solid the remainder of the season.

Derrick Mason – I have to agree with Speedy that Mason will get open a lot more in 2010 due to double coverage now shifting to Boldin. I am telling you, the sleeper 2010 QB is Joe Flacco without a doubt.

Anthony Gonzalez – Everyone’s 2009 sleeper WR of the year flamed out with a knee injury last year. He could return and do big things in the Colt offense for 2010.

Robert Meachem – Check out this guy’s stats the last 9 games of the season last year. They were phenomenal. Look for this former #1 draft pick to emerge as a bigger threat in NO in 2010.

Vincent Jackson – I hate putting a talent like Jackson this low on the list. Truth is it doesn’t look like he will play in 2010. This is the point in the draft I would take the gamble though that the Chargers or Jackson cave and he finds his way onto the field.

Percy Harvin – He only ranks this high assuming 2 things. 1. He overcomes his headache problems. 2. Brett Favre is under center in 2010. If one or the other of those do not happen, he should be dropped further down the list.

Eddie Royal – Hopefully Josh McDaniels realizes the talent he has in Royal and makes the most of it in 2010. There is no clear cut go-to receiver in Denver since Brandon Marshall’s departure. I see Royal filling that role.

Mike Williams(TB) – Williams has had a nice offseason and preseason to date. He figures to play a prominent role in any passing game Tampa can develop in 2010.

Mohamed Massaquoi – Massaquoi figures to be the main receiving threat on a team that should have to play a lot of catch up football. If he had a better QB than Jake Delhomme he would rank slightly higher.

Santonio Holmes – If it wasn’t for his 4 game suspension, Holmes would be ranked where Braylon Edwards is on this list. He would be an excellent third receiver for a team serving as a bye week fill in for 2010.

Jabar Gaffney – It is also possible that Gaffney grabs the top target spotlight in Denver. Because he has that potential, I rank him here in 2010.

Lee Evans – Hard to believe an undisputed #1 receiver is ranked this low. The Buffalo O-line and horrible QB play of Trent Edwards puts Evans way down here. Pick him up in dynasty leagues. Next year he will have Jake Locker at QB.

Donnie Avery – This undisputed #1 receiver is ranked here due to the same reasons as above. He ranks a little lower for 2010 because Sam Bradford’s a rookie QB this year.

Devin Aromashodu – Devin had a nice 4-catch 78-yard 1-TD performance in the first preseason game. Too bad it was all with Caleb Hanie at QB. He seems to be everyone’s 2010 sleeper WR. Here’s hoping he at least sees the playing field.

Terrell Owens – We could all be surprised and Owens could turn out to be the sleeper WR of 2010. I just don’t trust Carson Palmer’s right arm to hold up all season though, so my hopes here are tempered.

Nate Washington – Here is another potential #1 receiver. The Titans just don’t throw often enough for him to make a major fantasy impact.

Pierre Garcon – Garcon’s current injuries are opening the door for Gonzalez and Collie to get more playing time than him in 2010. He has to hope he gets himself back on the field in time to make a difference.

Devin Hester – Supposedly one of the starting receivers for now in Chicago. I foresee Aromashodu beating him out for that spot before long though.

Jacoby Jones – Jones should establish himself as the #2 receiving target in the pass happy Houston offense. If he definitely does that, he should be ranked higher on the list. He does have to contend with Kevin Walter for playing time which is what makes me rank him here.

Jeremy Maclin – Some places have Maclin ranked a lot higher. I just don’t see it happening with him being the third and sometimes fourth option for Kevin Kolb. Kolb will experience some first-year growing pains. That will hurt the receiver on the bottom end of the food chain first.

Devin Thomas – Impressed in his first preseason action. He could be a big benefactor as well with Donovan McNabb coming to town.

Austin Collie – This guy was a big red zone threat for Peyton Manning in his rookie season. I see no reason why that wouldn’t continue in 2010.

Chris Chambers – A veteran receiver that really came on in the second half of 2009. I still think KC will establish the passing game through Dwayne Bowe in 2010.

Kevin Walter – I put him on the list simply because he could win Houston’s #2 receiving job. I don’t think he will and Jacoby Jones will become a more household receiver name in 2010.

Steve Breaston – Everyone thinks Breaston will establish himself in 2010. I am a big doubter as long as Leinart is under center in Arizona.

Nate Burleson – Burleson has had a very up and down career. Last year was an up season. This year figures to be a downer after signing the decent contract he got with the Lions.

Brandon LaFell – LaFell has had a nice offseason and camp. He could become a number 1 receiver someday to replace the aging Steve Smith. For now though he will slide in as the number 2 man in Carolina.

Josh Morgan – He was one of my sleeper WR candidates in 2010. Problem was Crabtree did eventually sign and play and San Fran really focused heavily running the ball in 2009. Look for both to continue in 2010.

Darrius Heyward-Bey – Darrius could potentially establish himself as the #1 receiver in Oakland should Schilens continue to have problems with his foot. Adding Jason Campbell at QB doesn’t hurt either. Campbell is a marked improvement over JaMarcus Russell.

Brian Hartline – Hartline could settle in as a decent #2 guy for the emerging Chad Henne.

Mike Thomas - The #2 in Jacksonville rounds out my rankings. Here is hoping though you don’t have to rely on him consistently for your fantasy team in 2010.

As many receivers as there are, however, there are just as many ways to view their individual ability and value from a fantasy standpoint. One such way is to combine a bunch of rankings from well-known and/or well-respected sources and create one super-rankings list factoring in the results.

As with composite rankings at QB and RB, we again used CBS Sportsline.com, ESPN.com, Foxsports.com, Yahoo.com, NFL.com, jzak’s ranks with player capsules and sockonfl’s ranks with player capsules to develop the following composite list of the 83 best receivers.

Be sure to note, however, that some of the rankings used were not as up-to-date as the others, depending on how quickly each site has updated its own list of players and factored in offseason injuries, position battles, etc. Therefore, the following rankings may see a little skewing compared to what you’d expect.

Also don’t forget to check out all our 2010 fantasy football rankings and our draft startegies and sleepers.

Here is sockonfl’s wide receiver rankings for the 2010 season. These take into account training camp battles through the first week of preseason action.

Randy Moss – Moss is said to be in extremely great shape this offseason. Only goes to figure that would happen in a contract year for him. Look for Brady to Moss to be a hot connection in 2010. Probably not as special as the 2007 season, but a really great season in the offing nonetheless.

Andre Johnson – This big yardage and reception hog is top notch in my book. His only drawback is he has never scored double digit TD’s in a season yet. That’s the reason I give Moss the edge over him for 2010.

Reggie Wayne – Peyton’s #1 target is a consistent receiving machine. He usually is one of the top red zone receivers for Indy too. Hence his number 3 ranking.

Larry Fitzgerald – The name and past experience has him ranked this high. Personally with Leinart as his QB, I would pass on Fitz and let someone else have him.

Greg Jennings – A healthy oline heading into 2010 should allow more time for Aaron Rodgers to find Jennings down the field for longer passes. He should be in for a big rebound season in 2010.

Anquan Boldin – Q become the number 1 target for a rapidly maturing Joe Flacco. I look for Flacco to take another big step forward in 2010 and Boldin is the main reason for it.

Brandon Marshall – He might get ranked slightly higher in PPR leagues. Chad Henne’s new target should do well in the Miami spotlight.

Marques Colston – Colston doesn’t get the high number of receptions as others this high, but he makes his count for over 15.00 yard per catch average and being a big red zone target for Brees. Count on him for 1,100 yards and 10 TD’s.

Steve Smith(CAR) – Carolina’s Steve Smith reemerged from ruins once Matt Moore took over at QB in 2009. Moore is back for 2010, so look for the Steve Smith of old in 2010.

DeSean Jackson – DJax played well in both games that Kevin Kolb started in 2009. He is just so explosive, you just get him the ball and he makes plays. Kolb will continue making Jackson a top receiver.

Steve Smith(NYG) – The Giants Steve Smith emerged as Eli Mannings go to receiver in 2009. I am sure that will continue in 2010 with this first down machine. He was also very efficient in the red zone as well last year.

Chad Ochocinco – The wily veteran remains a top target and should once again be a top receiver in 2010.

Calvin Johnson – You ask why is he ranked so low. It’s QB play. He won’t establish himself into the star player that his until Matthew Stafford matures into a solid pro QB. I say pick Johnson in 2011 or 2012. He should be top 5 WR material by then.

TJ Houshmandzadeh – Housh’s last 2 season have been dismal to say the least. I think he will be pushed more this year by the younger talent on this team. Plus Hasselbeck should find more time with big Russell Okung over at left tackle. 2010 is one more year in the sun for Housh.

Sidney Rice – This ranking takes into account the fact that Brett Favre might not play yet. If Favre does play, I would bump him up a few spots on this list. He’s a solid receiver and a nice big red zone target.

Hines Ward – Ward is like the Rodney Dangerfield of wide receivers (he gets no respect). Year in and year out this guy posts solid numbers, but he is overshadowed by the elite players at the position. I would take this gritty player on my team any day.

Dwayne Bowe – I think Bowe is due for a bounceback 2010. He is in much better shape in camp this season and year in Charlie Weis offense should add up to big things for the #1 receiving target in KC.

Johnny Knox – Based on all the offseason chatter, it appears that Knox will be Cutler’s main threat in the Mike Martz offense.

Santana Moss – Moss has done decent throughout his career with very average QB’s throwing him the ball. Now Donny Mac is town in he could prove to be just what the doctor ordered for a breakout season from Santana Moss.

Donald Driver – Here is another tremendously consistent receiver that often gets overlooked in drafts. The offseason knee scopes are a concern especially at his age, but I feel comfortable drafting him here.

Braylon Edwards – I give Edwards the nod over Santonio Holmes in NY mainly due to Holmes’ 4 game suspension. He should emerge as a go to guy for Sanchez in his second season.

Mike Wallace – Not afraid to take him at this stage despite Big Ben’s probable 4 game absence. He will be solid the remainder of the season.

Derrick Mason – I have to agree with Speedy that Mason will get open a lot more in 2010 due to double coverage now shifting to Boldin. I am telling you, the sleeper 2010 QB is Joe Flacco without a doubt.

Wes Welker – He would definitely be ranked much higher in PPR leagues. This isn’t that so he falls here. All signs are pointing to a week 1 start for Welker so far. I would draft him with confidence. If you don’t have confidence, just pick up Edelman as a handcuff in the later rounds.

Look for this this former #1 draft pick to emerge as a bigger threat in NO in 2010.

1 is he overcomes his headache problems. 2 is Brett Favre is under center in 2010.

The Buffalo oline and horrible QB play of Trent Edwards puts Evans way down here. Pick him up in dynasty leagues. Next year he will have Jake Locker at QB.

Donnie Avery – This undisputed #1 receiver is ranked here due to the same reasons as above. He ranks a little lower for 2010 because Sam Bradford’s a rookie QB this year.

Devin Aromashodu – Devin had a nice 4 catch 78 yard 1 TD performance in the first preseason game.

Chaz Schilens – Schilens has some talent if he can just overcome the foot injuries that have dogged him his entire career. It is possible he never makes it in the NFL.

Kolb will experience some first year growing pains.

I still think though KC will establish the passing game through Dwayne Bowe in 2010.

This year figures to be a downer after signing the decent contract he got with the Lions this year.

Darrius Heyward – Bey – Darrius could potential establish himself as the #1 receiver in Oakland should Schilens continue to have problems with his foot. Adding Jason Campbell at QB doesn’t hurt either. He is a marked improvement over JaMarcus Russell.

Brian Hartline – Hartline could settle in as a decent #2 guy for the emerging Chad Henne.

Mike Thomas - The #2 in Jacksonville rounds out my rankings. Here is hoping though you don’t have to rely on him consistently for your fantasy team in 2010.

Once upon a time, wide receivers were as exciting in fantasy circles as a rubber band. But the world just keeps evolving. The realm of rubber bands have been revolutionized by the silly band. Similarly, in fantasy football, receivers have become all the rage.

And rightfully so. With the emergence of running backs by committee, fantasy football has evolved yet again, leaving the rest of us to either adapt or suffer the consequences.

Factoring in a slew of new up-and-coming receiving talents, here are my 2010 wide receiver redraft rankings:

1. Andre Johnson, HOU. His age, size, speed and overall skill set make him a nightmare to cover and the top target in an excessively pass-happy offense that will see plenty of shootouts throughout the season.

2. Randy Moss, NE. Remember, this isn’t a dynasty ranking. Moss always plays better when he has something to prove. When he has a chip on his shoulder. When he’s playing for his next contract. He has all three going for him in 2010, and will see ample targets as the Patriots attempt one last hurrah before a potential changing of the guard. Moss will have an elite 2010. After that is anyone’s guess.

3. Roddy White, ATL. Shocked? Don’t be. Just look at Roddy’s consistency the past three seasons … even last year when Matt Ryan faced some growing pains. Ryan will rise from the ashes of his sophomore disappointment to post solid numbers, with Roddy White benefactor 1A.

4. Reggie Wayne, IND. Only certainties in life are death, taxes and that Reggie Wayne will post elite receiver stats. A bit of a logjam for the Colts passing game with the return of Anthony Gonzalez and a small decrease in stats across the second half of last season leave me ranking Wayne here, but he could easily finish as the top fantasy receiver this season, too.

5. Larry Fitzgerald, ARI. Only uncertainty here begins and ends with the quarterback. Sure, the loss of Kurt Warner will likely affect Fitz’s numbers – slightly. I do think that Matt Leinart will need a big reliable receiver much like an infant relies on a favorite blankey or binky.

6. Calvin Johnson, DET. The Lions will be playing from behind plenty this season. Calvin and Matthew Stafford started showing signs of developed chemistry as the season wore on last year. The addition of Nate Burleson will help keep defenses from gang-covering Johnson. This all means a resurgence for the talented young pass catcher.

7. Miles Austin, DAL. Plenty of people are very high on Austin. I’m totally on the fence. Hard to get uber-excited just yet over a receiver who hasn’t proven his worth for an extended amount of time. Also curious to see how things are divvied out to an offense that gained an elite rookie receiver in Dez Bryant and promoted backfield receiving option Felix Jones to top dog running back.

8. Greg Jennings, GB. Coming off a down season by most people’s standards, Jennings was affected more by a slipshod O-line and Aaron Rodgers’ scramble for his life. Look at his stats later in the season when the O-line solidified a little. This season, Green Bay’s line is much improved. Jennings numbers will follow suit.

9. DeSean Jackson, PHI. If you haven’t read Larry Fitzgerald’s capsule above, do so now. Then insert Donovan McNabb into Kurt Warner’s slot and Kevin Kolb’s name in for Matt Leinart. Except Jackson isn’t as talented as Larry Fitz, hence the lower ranking here.

10. Brandon Marshall, MIA. If Marshall can make Kyle Orton look semi-legitimate, imagine what he can do with a young, talented Chad Henne? Offseason hip surgery may hamper him somewhat this summer and may affect his early season a tad, but Marshall is talented enough to net you plenty a fantasy point. If only he was more stable off the field.

11. Sidney Rice, MIN. Value is tied directly into Brett Favre’s impending return to the Vikings. If Favre somehow zigs when we all expect him to zag, like I suggest he should here, than Rice’s value plummets.

12. Vincent Jackson, SD. A super-talented young receiver with a history, lately, of being a knucklehead. Where have I heard this before? If he stays in San Diego and avoids suspensions or other sanctions, Jackson has the potential to move up this list at will. Question marks keep him here for the time being.

13. Steve Smith, CAR. A flag football injury won’t affect Smith’s 2010 regular season, according to various reports. Smith had a down 2009 due largely to ineffective QB play from Jake Delhomme. His stats saw a nice rebound when Matt Moore took over. Moore should start the season as the Panthers’ starter, and even if Jimmy Clausen or Tony Pike see some reps, Smith is going to see his share of receptions.

14. Marques Colston, NO. I’ve never personally been a fan of Colston in terms of fantasy potential, but it is hard to argue his place in one of the most prolific passing attacks in the league. The emergence of Robert Meachem will open even more routes for Colston, and while you may need to suffer through a down game here and there, Colston should provide some solid outings the rest of the time.

15. Anquan Boldin, BAL. Bringing a whole new dimension to Baltimore, it will be interesting to see how the Ravens incorporate their new top receiver into an offense known for rushing more than anything through the air. Boldin has been questionable at times during the latter half of the season and has seen his share of injuries … however, a more balanced offensive attack will keep the pressure off Boldin’s shoulders and could lead to a nice rebound season.

16. Michael Crabtree, SF. Showed plenty of upside last season despite missing time early in the campaign. With a full preseason to work with Alex Smith and a solid running game keeping defenses honest, Crabtree should continue to climb these standings this season.

17. Mike Sims-Walker, JAX. Separated himself from the rest of the pack as the true WR1 in Jacksonville and benefits from defenses spending so much of their resources trying to stop Maurice Jones-Drew. It would be exciting to see what Sims-Walker could do with a more reliable QB under center.

18. Chad Ochocinco, CIN. How the elite have fallen in places. No. 85 is still flashing his gold teeth in the league, and will still likely sit atop the receptions pile in Cincinnati. The addition of Antonio Bryant should help give Ochocinco some breathing room. A bounce-back 2010 is a good possibility.

19. Hines Ward/Mike Wallace. Breaking the rules on this one, I know. However, as sweet as Mike Wallace looked last season in spells, it is hard for me to envision him as the definite top pass catching option with Hines Ward still playing. Byron Leftwich will be looking for reliability when he wings out a pass in place of the suspended Ben Roethlisberger, and Hines Ward is about as reliable as one could expect. In dynasty leagues, I’d want Mike Wallace hands-down out of the two. In redrafts, I really don’t know. Guess I’d lean on Ward’s side for this season, especially in PPR formats.

20. Steve Smith, NYG. Was a nice surprise for people who chose to grab him and stick with it. His receptions are plenty nice in PPR formats and he is the official No. 1 wideout in Giantsland at the moment.

21. Wes Welker, NE. A lot higher than most sites have Welker, but then again, most of those sites had rankings out before Welker’s near-miraculous recovery (so far) from a torn ACL and MCL. Watch his progress this summer. If he continues to improve at a rapid pace and finds himself starting fairly quickly into the regular season, than you’ve gotten yourself a bargain … especially in PPR formats.

22. Dwayne Bowe, KC. I’m never a fan of knuckleheads on my team, and Bowe is definitely one of those. After a suspension due to drugs last year, he reported that the Chiefs were supplying women to players on road trips. Can’t imagine that will help his stock on Sundays. The Chiefs need a reliable passing game if they want to take the next step forward as a franchise, and Bowe definitely has the skill set to produce. Just tread carefully.

23. Pierre Garcon, IND. Sure the Colts have a logjam of receiving talent, but Garcon has proven to be the official No. 2 WR in a Peyton Manning offense.

24. Hakeem Nicks, NYG. Second Giants receiver in a very short period of ranking? Am I nuts? Yes, but that isn’t the point. Reports from New York state that the battle between Nicks and Mario Manningham will be fast and furious for the No. 2 WR slot. Methinks that Nicks’ battle will be moreso for the top wideout spot by midseason.

25. TJ Houshmanzadeh, SEA. Someone has to catch passes in an offense that will habitually be playing catchup. Golden Tate is a rookie receiver, meaning he’ll likely be a factor moreso next year or the season after. Housh is falling far enough on enough boards to be considered a mild value pick. Just don’t reach for him.

26. Percy Harvin, MIN. Provided Brett Favre comes back to Vikingsland, Harvin should continue to mature in his second season. His skillset allows him to be involved in the offense in various ways, upping his staying power. Lingering headache issues could pose a problem at some point.

27. Robert Meachem, NO. Have to admit that I wasn’t really in-tune with Meachem until I saw him dropped in a dynasty league I’m in. Reports from all angles are super favorable for Meachem, who was a TD beast as the season wore on. There are some who think Meachem will leapfrog Marques Colston in New Orleans at some point this season. However, even as a No. 2 in a Drew Brees offense, Meachem has definite value.

28. Donald Driver, GB. I’m a Packers fan, but I’m not super-high on Driver this season. Notice how the roles shifted last season as the Packers O-line finally solidified. Driver will find himself in a more Wes Welkerian role … which helps him bounce up this list more than I would have liked.

29. Santonio Holmes, NYJ. The early-season suspension doesn’t exactly help his fantasy stock, but Holmes has the talent to help sophomore QB Mark Sanchez take the next step in his pro career. Considering that the Jets are a run-first club, Holmes will have some consistency issues at times … but at least defensive pressure will likely be focused more on Shonn Greene and LaDanian Tomlinson than the passing game.

30. Devin Aromashodu/Johnny Knox/Devin Hester, CHI. Cheating again here a little. Whoever emerges from this mass of receivers as the main option for Jay Cutler in a Mike Martz offense will catapult himself up this list quicker than the Roadrunner zips past Wile E. Coyote. However, reports from Chicago are so back-and-forth, it is nearly impossible at this point to determine who will rise to the top. So, in most leagues that are drafting around this time, you’re stuck drafting all three in hopes you hit the lottery, not that second place will be a bad option, either, in this offense.

Other receivers of note:

Kenny Britt will find himself as the top dog in the Tennessee passing game at some point this season. I’m just not that excited about Vince Young’s style of play in terms of being able to consistently feed the ball to Britt.

Steve Breaston and Early Doucet will play opposite Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona. Questions at QB make things a little muddy, and while Breaston has the early lead in terms of the WR2 job, Doucet’s size and skillset are arguably better than Breaston. Perhaps a late-round sleeper if you need one.

Many will be focused on rookie receivers Damaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, and even Eddie Royal, in Denver to give due credit to Jabar Gaffney. However, when push came to shove the end of last season, Gaffney was the one who did his job the best. If Gaffney holds off the competition for primary replacement to Brandon Marshall, he’ll be a nice sleeper pick in the late rounds.

Whoever winds up the WR2 in Houston could see a nice uptick in value. Kevin Walter’s hold on the spot is tenuous, as Jacoby Jones makes a play for the spot. Stay tuned.

With a possible suspension looming for Santana Moss, and his aging skillset, this is the year that Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly need to start earning their paychecks. Either could be a sleeper in a Donovan McNabb offense, just not sure who will emerge.

Julian Edelman was a highly sought value player so far this summer in fantasy circles, but the quick recovery by Wes Welker will directly affect Edelman’s value for this season, since they’re from the same mold. If Welker has a setback, and considering his injuries, that is highly possible, Edelman is a sneaky nice add.

Here is a look at how each team in the AFC South currently shapes up prior to the NFL Training Camps.

Indianapolis Colts

QB

Peyton Manning: Manning is probably the most consistent QB you will find in fantasy circles. No need to panic at QB for Indy, although in another 2-3 years they may want to look for someone they would like to groom as his replacement.

RB

Joseph Addai: After being pushed initially by 2009 first round pick Donald Brown, Addai settled in and completed a decent season for fantasy owners. You can no longer count on him being your RB1, but he makes for a solid RB2 candidate.

Donald Brown: The rookie struggled with the injury bug most of the season and really didn’t make a huge impact for himself statistically. Although as previously stated, I think the Brown acquisition provided some motivation for Addai. From that perspective the move was successful. I do think Brown will eat more into Addai’s playing time in the future.

WR

Reggie Wayne: One of the top receivers in the game. He should still have a few more quality seasons left.

Austin Collie/Pierre Garcon/Anthony Gonzalez: The Colts definitely do not lack in WR talent. All 3 of these players should contribute to the 2010 passing attack and one of the three will be ready to take over the reigns as top dog once Reggie Wayne retires. The big question is which one of these players is best to own. Last year it was Austin Collie. This year could be different.

TE

Dallas Clark: Clark stayed healthy the entire season and posted stellar fantasy numbers at the TE position in 2009. I would look for his production to go down somewhat in 2010 due to the emergence of the aforementioned WRs.

K

Adam Viniatieri: Viniatieri may finally be over the injury bug that has plagued him the past few seasons and maybe now he can contribute again in 2010. The word out of OTAs and minicamps so far has been promising. Due to how efficient the Colts are in the Red Zone though, the Colts kicker figures to finish in the middle third of fantasy kickers for 2010.

DEF/ST

The Indianapolis defensive unit shows flashes of brilliance every year, but it almost always seems some injuries beset them and it puts the defense ranking in the middle third of the fantasy defensive pack.

Tennessee Titans

QB

Vince Young: VY looked more like the player that came out and won 2006 ROY honors last season than the player that struggled and then rode the bench for the first half of 2009. He keeps many drives alive with his legs and has been a proven winner in the past. VY should be a fixture at QB for the Titans for many years to come.

RB

Chris Johnson: Johnson totally dazzled and amazed the football world and fantasy owners alike in 2009. Although I expect CJ2K to post another respectable season, I would look for a decline in his touches in 2010 as Jeff Fisher tries not to burn him out in only a few seasons.

Javon Ringer/LaGarrette Blount: Ringer or Blount will need to win the training camp battle this year in order to get some of the scrap carry leftovers that Chris Johnson will leave. I would give the nod to Ringer since he already has a season into the Titans system.

WR

Nate Washington: Injuries plagued Washington most of the 2009 season. He did have some nice performances mixed in when he could keep himself on the field. The Titans hope he can develop some more consistency in 2010.

Kenny Britt: 2010 is the year I believe Britt will take a step forward and become the leading receiving target on this team. He is a great target down by the goal line for VY to find.

TE

Bo Scaife/Jared Cook: Scaife was resigned by the Titans and knows the system well. Eventually he will hand over the reigns to Jared Cook as the TE in Titanland.

K

Rob Bironas: The Titan offense typically struggles in the red zone every year and 2010 should be no exception. Bironas will finish in the top third of the fantasy kickers because of it.

DEF/ST

The Titans defense is young and struggled throughout much of the 2009 season. 2010 may be another repeat in the bottom third of fantasy defenses until some of the young talent on the team develops.

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB

David Garrard: Garrard is a capable NFL QB but is not an elite option at the position by any means. Garrard was given a vote of confidence by the Jaguar brass by them not selecting a QB in this year’s draft. Garrard just needs to develop some chemistry with the young receivers to step up his game.

RB

Maurice Jones-Drew: You really can’t get anyone much better than MJD at the running back position. He carries the majority of the load and has posted top 10 RB fantasy numbers in his entire career. Look for him to be elite again in 2010.

Rashad Jennings: Jennings is a nice complimentary piece to MJD in the offense and was a great steal last year in the seventh round of the draft. He is the MJD handcuff for 2010.

WR

Mike Sims-Walker: MSW was the leading receiver on the team in 2009. Look for that to continue in 2010. He should be a decent WR3 play especially in PPR leagues.

Mike Thomas: Last year’s rookie will most likely take over the other WR slot vacated by the departure of Torry Holt. He needs to hone his skills more to become a viable fantasy option.

TE

Marcedes Lewis: Lewis has been a decent spot play now and again at TE. He may be challenged a little more though for the position by Zach Miller (not the one from the Raiders).

K

Josh Scobee: Scobee figures to finish in the bottom third of fantasy kickers in 2010.

DEF/ST

This defensive unit could hardly generate any sacks all last season. This is a unit that figures to finish near the bottom in fantasy points and should be avoided on draft day.

Houston Texans

QB

Matt Schaub: Schaub finally had his first full healthy season in the NFL and he proved in 2009 why he is a top 10 talent QB. With the weapons he has in the passing game, there is no reason to expect a decline anytime soon.

RB

Steve Slaton/Ben Tate/Arian Foster: Tate was the rookie added to the mix this offseason. He is behind a little bit since he has missed most of the offseason workouts due to a hamstring injury. Tate is back practicing and the team figures to use him on most first and second downs. Steve Slaton should see action as the third down back except in short yardage situations.

WR

Andre Johnson: What else can really be said about Andre Johnson? He is a stud WR in any fantasy format and should continue to be with Matt Schaub at the helm.

Kevin Walter/Jacoby Jones: Walter had a very disappointing 2009 season. He was retained though and should challenge to start opposite Andre. However Jones seems to be developing into quite a solid complimentary player and will probably be given an ample shot during training camp to unseat Walter to start in 2010.

TE

Owen Daniels: Daniels was enjoying the best season of his career in 2009 before it came to an abrupt end with a knee injury. If Daniels regains his pre-injury 2009 form, he could be a formidable force at the TE position in 2010.

K

Kris Brown/Neil Rackers: Brown and Rackers figure to duke it out in training camp for the kicking spot in Houston. I would give Brown the nod and expect him to finish top part of the middle third of all fantasy kickers in 2010.

DEF/ST

The Houston defense settled in nicely towards the middle of the season last year. The Brian Cushing suspension will hurt in the first four games, but after that don’t be surprised for this defense to finish just outside the fringe of the top third of defensive units in 2010.

Here is the predicted order of finish for 2010:

Indianapolis Colts

Houston Texans

Tennessee Titans

Jacksonville Jaguars

LenDale White gets reunited with his college coach and he reportedly shows up at camp at a playing weight he probably hasn’t seen since junior high.

Then, today, the Seahawks cut him. There is more to this whole thing than him not being “ready to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks.” That comment is from GM John Schneider in an Associated Press story. The vagueness is comical.

More details to follow, I’m sure. But in any case, the “LenDale White Comeback Experience featuring Pete Carroll” isn’t happening this season.

Will any other team out there pick him up? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Here are a couple other notable items from around fantasy football:

Ben Tate – Houston Texans rookie running back is day-to-day with a (hamstring) and the team is not sure when he will return. Awesome. Picked him in the first round of a rookie draft last weekend. He’s my Shonn Greene for 2010.

Patrick Crayton – NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora is saying the Cowboys have no intention of trading Crayton. The veteran WR doesn’t like the experts already talking about the Miles Austin-Dez Bryant pairing — so going to happen. All Crayton wants is an open competition… Which he’d lose. Crayton told a radio audience today he wanted to be released immediately, according to an ESPN report.

Ronnie Brown — Says his foot is around 80%. Did you/Will you label him a keeper for 2010? He is taking part in minicamp at least. RB’s health is a big story for a lot of fantasy owners out there. We’ll be following it all NFL preseason.

Chad Henne – According to a report on KFFL, the Dolphins are going to take more chances on big plays in the passing game in 2010. Brandon Marshall’s arrival will do that to a team. If Chad Henne completes his part of the equation he might live up to all the “sleeper” lists he’ll be on in June and July.

Jacoby Jones – Another report from KFFL: Jones will compete with Kevin Walter for a starting spot opposite Andre Johnson. A talented receiver could make a killing in single coverage on the other side in that offense. Jones will be on those “sleeper” lists. He might even be on mine.

Cadillac Williams – We’ll end with another running back. According to USA Today, via KFFL, Cadillac says he’s finally 100% after suffering through knee injuries in 2007 and 2008. He rushed for 821 yards last season. In his rookie season, 2005-06, he rushed for almost 1,200 yards and scored six TDs. He was among the most promising rookies of that season. He would need to find that form again for fantasy owners to pick him as anything more than one of the 5,000,000 RBBC backs that are out there. Still, “sleeper” anyone?

Ben Roethlisberger – Oh, sorry. Cadillac wasn’t the very end, but we all need to keep Roethlisberger as an afterthought at this point anyway. He was only reinstated so he could participate in team activities. Big Ben is still going to be suspended to start the season, and I saw one report that said it could be as many as eight games or as few as four. Eight games is a ton in fantasy. The length of the suspension is key. The ninjas, we’ll be here to let you know how to draft when we all know a little more.

A rare pile of fantasy football notes in May, I know, but the LenDale mess was too juicy to not give you. Stay deadly, ninjas.

Editor’s Note: This is the first of hopefully many posts by Nick Darin, a law student from Detroit who roots for, surprise, the Lions.

In dynasty football, you always want to be to the party early, never late. If you’re late you will be stuck holding dead weight.

In my opinion, the owners in dynasty leagues that are willing to take risks and make moves when it’s unpopular are the ones that will be the teams constantly in the race. Sure you’re going to make mistakes every now and then … I traded Jamaal Charles, not claiming to be perfect at this, but I also acquired Sidney Rice prior to the acquisition of Favre and dealt Eddie Royal prior to one of the worse non-injury drops in production I have ever seen.

Check out some of my hot additions that could prove to be big time come the end of the season. Last year’s stats are in parenthesis.

Quarterbacks:

1. Chad Henne (60% completion, 2,738 yards, 11 TDs, 13 ints): After the Ronnie Brown injury, the Dolphins basically scrapped the “wildcat” which led to an increased amount of throwing for Henne. Currently the Dolphins have nothing at wide receiver, which could all change after the draft and free agency.

Henne can throw the ball well and he led the team well down the stretch. The running game in Miami is great, and if they get a solid receiver, Henne could be the breakout quarterback of the season. With quarterback being one of the most consistent positions in the world of dynasty, one extra one can never hurt.

Also with the Tuna running the show he will put the pieces in place to allow Henne to blossom … remember this is the same team that Chad Pennington threw for 3,600 yards and 19 touchdowns with, and Henne is much more talented than Pennington.

2. Matt Moore (final five games 63% completion, 990 yards, 8 TDs, 1 int): Carolina still has one of the most dynamic wideouts in football in Steve Smith and they have one of the best rushing attacks with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

While the yards aren’t overly impressive, the 8-to-1 TD-to-int ratio is pretty impressive. He also completes passes at a high percentage, and with the weapons stated above he could be in for a good season next year. The only worry with Moore is that the Panthers owe Delhomme a ton of money this year and John Fox has loyalty to Delhomme. Moorewill be 26 years old at the start of the season, and Carolina is a solid team which I think will have a bounce back year to save Fox’s job.

Moore is a low-risk, unknown-reward player. I think that Moore will win the starting job either this year or the next and is a prime candidate to have a breakout year once he does take the starting job.

Running Backs:

3. Marshawn Lynch (629 total yards, 28 rec, 2 TDs): This is the same guy that in two prior seasons had north of 1,200 total yards and 7TDs. He is on the trading block and he can still run the ball.

He will be 24 when the season starts. Lynch can both run the ball and catch it out of the back field. He went into the dog house, after his suspension, and Fred Jackson has taken over the lead back duties in Buffalo. Lynch has some off-the-field issues, but with only three seasons worth of abuse, he could have three to four good seasons left.

He should be on some owner’s team, but it shouldn’t cost you and arm and a leg to pry him loose. Lynch could he be this year’s Cedric Benson if he gets sent to a team like Detroit or San Diego, and gets full-time touches.

Wide Receivers:

4. Malcom Kelly (25 rec, 347 yards, 0 TDs): Ok, so Kelly hasn’t really done anything of note yet, but one must have some faith. With Shanny working his magic in Washington anything can happen.

While I am not going to tell you Kelly is the next Brandon Marshall, I am going to tell you that at 6-foot-4 and 219 pounds, he sure looks the part. One of the more exciting things about Kelly is that he is most likely available for nothing more than a waiver add.

The risk is almost zero and the reward could be great. If he turns out to have a decent year, he could be a solid bye week fill in or, better yet, a nice throw-in for a trade during mid-season.

5. Devin Aromashodu (Final 4 games: 22 recs, 282 yards, 4 TDs): I will admit that this is most likely to be a long shot since Aromashodu is likely on a team in your league and the owner is not giving him up. I can’t say I would blame them.

Jay Cutler has his back and wanted him in the lineup from the start. Mike Martz turns average wide outs into great fantasy options. He is big and fast and by his four-game breakout, you can make the case that he and Cutler are on the same page. I project he will be the No. 1 wide receiver come the start of the season.

He has a good rapport with Cutler, and Cutler is not afraid to make any throw. Not to mention he plays my Detroit Lions twice, so that’s good for him. If the price is right, I feel he is worth the risk.

6. Kevin Ogletree (7 rec, 96 yards): Here is another guy in the mold of Malcom Kelly. He doesn’t have as much upside as Kelly, but the Cowboys have turned a nobody (Miles Austin) into a fantasy must-have.

Romo spreads the ball around and Roy Williams is doing his best to get cut. Ogletree is a hungry player that will have something to prove. Beat writers have been raving about him and say that he could overtake Williams soon — he might be an injury away from seeing some serious playing time.

The reasons to go after Ogletree are similar to Malcom Kelly. Although I like Kelly more because of the reduced competition, Ogletree would have the superior quarterback.

7. Jacoby Jones (27 rec, 437 yards, 6 TDs): Kevin Walter is not going to be back (unrestricted free agent), which makes Jones the incumbent second wideout. Andre Johnson is one of the best wideouts in the game and commands a double-team if the other teams know what is good for them.

This will leave Jones in one-on-one coverage and with one of the most dynamic passing offenses in the NFL this should lead to bigger numbers for Jones. Jones will either be on waivers or he can be had for a low price.

The risk is low with Jones and the reward is high. Schaub is asserting himself as a top quarterback and the Texans are primed for a playoff run. I am thinking Jones will produce in a similar way to Donald Driver.

8. Julian Edelman (37 rec, 359 yards, 1 TD): One injury normally doesn’t have the impact on fantasy production that Wes Welker’s did on Edelman. He went from nobody to reception machine in one game.

Although his production will most likely decline if and when Welker returns, no one knows how Welker will be when he returns. I don’t think he will put up the outrageous reception numbers, but he could get close to 100 catches. One of the most interesting things is that he is on the Patriots. It has been reported that New England has already talked about letting Moss go after this coming season, and they don’t tend to keep players around that they feel are replaceable (which is pretty much anyone not named Tom Brady).

Edelman will be 24 by the start of the season and could continue to grow with Brady at the helm. If you can sell to the owner that Welker will be the man when he returns, you could get him for a low price. There is no way to know how Welker will come back, but if its slow you will have a great wideout on your roster.

I find it highly unlikely that Edelman would be on waivers, but if he is pick him up ASAP. If not, I would explore a trade for him. If the price is reasonable, I would take the chance. Deep sleeper, as well, would be Brandon Tate (if Moss is gone he could be relevant in a year, or this year if Edelman falters.)

9. Andre Caldwell (51 rec, 432 yards, 3TD): I don’t know if I trust Carson Palmer, but Laveranues Coles is awful and Matt Jones isn’t the answer.

So by default, Caldwell should be the starter opposite Chad Ochocinco. Caldwell could turn out to be a solid player, and at 25 years old when the season starts, he has some upside.

I think Caldwell could be in store for a solid season if Palmer bounces back and gets back to his Pro Bowl form. If you believe in Palmer, then the belief of Caldwell should follow.

Tight Ends:

10. Tony Scheffler (31 rec, 416 yards, 2 TDs): With only one game all last year that anyone would have regretted not playing Scheffler, his demand should not be too high. He is currently floating around the waiver wire in my league.

In his first three years, he was showing better numbers each year, until McDaniels came in with his tight-end-unfriendly system. I expect him to be moved over the offseason to some team that will utilize his pass-catching ability. In my opinion, his value is at an all-time low — you might even be able to just pick him up off waivers.

If he gets on the right team, Scheffler will likely get back into the top 10 for tight ends. At a position where there are only a few dominant players, Scheffler could return to the pre-McDaniels form and become meaningful again.

What is your opinion on these players to acquire? Have others you’d like to share? We’d love to hear your comments below.
